How to create a new topic

You can create a new topic in the topic tree using three different methods: context menu, keyboard shortcuts, or the ribbon. Each method starts and ends with the same steps.

Step 1: Select where the new topic will go

  • Open the Topics screen.

  • Select an existing topic where you want to insert the new topic.

    • If the database is still empty, select the yellow file cabinet icon.

Step 2: Choose a method to create the topic

Pick one of the following three methods to create your topic:

2a. Use the context menu

  • Right-click the selected topic.

  • Select New Topic.

  • Choose one of the following placement options:

    • Lower – creates a subtopic under the selected topic.

    • Above – creates a topic above the selected topic.

    • Below – creates a topic below the selected topic.

2b. Use keyboard shortcuts

  • Use one of these shortcut combinations while a topic is selected:

    • CTRL + L – create a topic as a Lower (subtopic).

    • CTRL + B – create a topic Above.

    • CTRL + U or INSERT – create a topic Below.

2c. Use the ribbon

  • Go to the Edit tab in the ribbon.

  • Click one of the available New Topic buttons:

    • Choose Lower, Above, or Below based on where you want the topic to be created.

Step 3: Name the new topic

  • After the topic is created, type in a name.

  • Press ENTER to confirm.

Notes

  • Make sure you've selected a topic before creating a new one; this defines where the new topic will be placed.

  • The options Lower, Above, and Below refer to the position of the new topic relative to the selected one. For details, see [Topics: Lower, Above, Below].
