How to change the table style in a Word publication

When you create a Word publication in Mavim, the tables use a default style defined in a template file. If you want your tables to have a different look, you can adjust the .dotm template file and upload it back into Mavim. This article explains how to update the table styles and apply them to your publications.

Step 1: Copy the .dotm file

  1. Go to the guide on changing Word publication defaults.

  2. Follow the steps to copy the .dotm file from the Mavim online environment to your local machine.

Step 2: Edit the table style in Word

  1. Open the copied .dotm file on your computer.

  2. Insert an empty table via Insert > Table.

  3. After inserting, the Table Design tab will appear. The first styles in the list are the Mavim custom table styles:

    • MavimTableField – used for field tables.

    • MavimTableRelation – used for relationship category tables.

  4. Right-click on one of these table styles and select Modify Table Style.

  5. Under Style based on, select the Word table style you want as the new base style, then click OK.

  6. Repeat this process for any other table styles you want to update.

  7. Once done, delete the empty table you created.

  8. Save the file as a .dotm file, using the same name as the original template.

Step 3: Upload the updated template to Mavim

  1. In Mavim, click the gray slide-out bar at the top center of the screen.

  2. Select File transfer > Upload.

  3. Upload your modified .dotm file. The file will appear in the Mavim Cloud on TempDisk.

  4. In Mavim, go t to Tools > File explorer.

  5. In the Explorer screen, drag the updated .dotm file into the correct folder:

    • S:\Mavim\Wordthemes\...

  6. Make sure the file name matches the original, so the system overwrites the old template.

Step 4: Publish with the new settings

After the template has been uploaded and replaced, you can create a new Word publication. Your updated table styles will now be applied automatically.

Notes

  • Always keep a backup of the original .dotm file in case you need to revert.

  • If the new style is not applied, double-check that the file name exactly matches the old template.
