How to create hyperlinks in the Description screen
Target audience:
Users working in the Description screen who want to link to other topics using text or images.
Core purpose:
To explain how to insert hyperlinks—either as text or images—and how they behave in the Relationships screen.
Before you begin
Make sure the toolbars in the Description screen are enabled. Without them, hyperlink options won’t be accessible.
Create a hyperlink using the menu (text or image)
- Place your cursor in the Description screen:
- At the spot where you want the hyperlink as text, or
- On the image you want to turn into a hyperlink.
- Right-click and choose Insert > Hyperlink, or press CTRL + K.
- A window with the topic tree opens.
- Select the topic you want to link to.
- (Optional) Check the box to change the hyperlink text.
- Enter your preferred link text in the field below.
- Click OK.
Create a hyperlink by copy-pasting a topic (text only)
- In the Topics screen, select the topic you want to link to.
- Choose Copy.
- Select the topic you want to link from.
- Place your cursor in the Description screen where the hyperlink should appear.
- Paste using CTRL + V or right-click and select Paste.
How hyperlinks behave in Relationships
- Each hyperlink creates a relationship:
- Hyperlink to (target topic)
- Hyperlink from (source topic)
- If the same hyperlink is added multiple times in the Description screen, it only appears once in the Relationships screen.
Hyperlink text behavior
- By default, the hyperlink text matches the name of the topic it links to.
- If the topic name changes, the hyperlink text updates automatically.
- If the topic is deleted, the hyperlink becomes plain text.
Import Note
- Due to performance issues, hyperlinks that are used in appendices for your Word publications will only be available 1 level deep.
