How to use the ruler in the Description screen

Target audience:
Users editing content in the Description screen who want to manage tabs and margins visually.

Core purpose/goal:
To explain how to enable and use the horizontal and vertical rulers in the Description screen to adjust tabs and margins.


Steps to access the ruler

📝 Note: The Description screen must be in Print Layout mode.

Option 1: Using the context menu

  1. Place your cursor in the Description screen.
  2. Right-click to open the context menu.
  3. Go to View > Horizontal Ruler or View > Vertical Ruler.

Option 2: Using the ribbon

  1. Go to the Layout tab.
  2. In the Description Screen Options group, select Horizontal Ruler and/or Vertical Ruler.

Set measurement units (cm or inches)

  1. Right-click in the Description screen.
  2. Select View > Options.
  3. Choose your preferred unit of measurement: centimetres or inches.

Working with tabs

If you’ve added individual tabs (see #):

  • Move a tab: Drag it along the ruler to reposition.
  • Add a tab: Click directly on the ruler where you want the tab.
  • Delete a tab: Drag the tab off the ruler.

Adjust margins

The ruler displays:

  • Left margin
  • Right margin
  • Indentation
  • Maximum text width

To adjust:

  • Drag the margin or indent markers along the ruler to reposition them.

Important notes

  • Ruler visibility and functionality are only available in Print Layout mode.
  • Adjustments made via the ruler affect how content is displayed and printed.
  • Tabs and margins help with precise formatting and layout control.
