Portal - power bi instruction Question: How can I use data from the -- KA-01409

Question:

How can I use data from the Mavim Portal in Power BI?

Answer:

The following links give a detailed explanation of Power BI; both Power BI desktop (free and local installation) and Power BI Service (cloud-based platform)
https://docs.microsoft.com/en-gb/power-bi/fundamentals/power-bi-overview
https://docs.microsoft.com/en-gb/power-bi/fundamentals/service-service-vs-desktop

In order to share and distribute Power BI reports and dashboards; Power BI services must be used. You create a report in Power BI Desktop and publish it to Power BI Services. To give others access to view the report in Power BI Service; you must have a Power BI user license.

Note that Power BI Pro is part of O365 and therefore also uses the Cloud.

These are the brief steps:
1. You create a Mavim report in the Mavim Portal using the Power BI URL Icon (this Icon is only available for Portal users with Administrator or Moderator rights).

2. Add this link as web source to Power BI Desktop (and authenticate)

3. Create the desired visualizations in Power BI

4. Publish the report to Power BI Services

5. After publication in Power BI Service; set a data refresh on the data source.

This data refresh is set so that Power BI service can connect via OAuth2 to the Mavim Portal (and then to the report). If this is not set; the report refresh in Power BI Service will not work and following error message will appear
(Failed There was an error when processing the data in the dataset. The downloaded data is HTML; which is not the expected type. The URL may be wrong or you might not have provided the right credentials to the server).

6. Optionally; you can embed this report as a Tab in the Mavim Portal.

The following instruction video will show you how to embed a Power BI report inside the Mavim portal.
