If you want to add a characteristic to a relationship, follow these steps:
1. Double-click the cross beside the relationship 
2. Mavim opens a window with the relevant characteristics, from which you can make a choice:
3. The selected characteristic is added to the relationship.
If there are not yet any relationships and you want to add a relationship with a characteristic in one step, you can do this by either dragging the shape Characteristic onto the Activity shape, or choosing Add Characteristic from the right-click menu.
