How to: creating a start page for the portal Creating a home page for you Mavim Portal -- KA-01425
Creating a home page for you Mavim Portal can be a very useful tool to help users find their way around. Below are the steps required to help you create your own home page. There are two parts to this process:
- Creating a chart which will be used as the home page
- Configuring the Portal to use the chart as the home page
Creating the Chart:
Essentially; any chart type can be used but generally a Generic Chart is more versatile as you are free to link shapes to topics in Mavim. For this example we will be using a Generic Chart:
- In Mavim Manager; create a new topic. The location for this topic in the tree isn't of great importance but you will be including this topic in the publication.
- With the new topic selected; select the Modelling tab -> Overview -> Generic Chart. This will open Microsoft Visio.
- For the Generic Chart Options screen that pops up; make sure the following is selected:
and click OK. - Depending on the types of shapes you wish to use for your chart; select the appropriate stencil. In our example we will be using the Basic Diagram:
- From the stencil on the left; drag the desired shapes onto the drawing:
- Open the context menu for each shape and select Connect to a Topic in Mavim Manager:
- Select the Topic you want the shape to navigate to in the Portal.
- Repeat this for each shape in your chart:
- Save the chart and exit Visio.
The chart has now been created and the desired topics have been linked. This new topic and chart will need to be included in the the publication to the Portal before it can be used.
Configuring the Portal:
You will need the Administrator role to configure the home page for your Portal.
- Open the Mavim Portal and navigate to the topic you created for the home page.
- With the topic selected; click the Charts tab on the right panel.
- Now click the Favorites and select Create external link.
- The URL for this chart will be copied to your clipboard.
- Now open the Dashboard -> Mavim Administration Page and click the Lock icon:
- Select the General tab:
- Paste the URL from your clipboard into the Home page address field and click the Update button to the right of the field.
Now when the Portal is opened or the Home button is clicked; users will see the chart you created and each shape will navigate to the topic you linked in Visio.
