Strange characters (XE) appear in Word after publication

After publishing to Word, you may see strange characters such as (XE) in the relationship category. These are not errors, but hidden index field codes that Word is set to display.

Why these characters appear

The (XE) tags are Word index entries. They become visible when Word is set to display hidden text.

 

Steps to hide the XE characters

  1. In your Word document, go to File > Options.

  2. Select the Display tab.

  3. Under Always show these formatting marks on the screen, clear the checkbox for Hidden text.

  4. Click OK to apply the change.

The (XE) characters will no longer be visible in your document.
