Understanding and configuring inheritance for field sets

Target audience

Administrators and advanced users managing field sets and topic hierarchies in Mavim.

Purpose

This article explains what inheritance is, the available options when assigning field sets to topics, and how to modify or undo inheritance.

What is inheritance?

Inheritance determines how field sets assigned to a topic are propagated to its subtopics in the topic tree. You can assign a field set to:
  • A single topic
  • All its subtopics
  • Only its direct subtopics (one level deep)

Inheritance options

When assigning field sets to topics (see Field Set – Assign Directly to Topic), you can choose one of these options:
  • Topic
Assigns the field set only to the selected topic. No inheritance.
  • Topic and Subtopics
Assigns the field set to the selected topic and its direct subtopics. Deeper levels are not included.
  • Subtopics
Assigns the field set only to the direct subtopics. The selected topic and deeper levels are excluded.
  • Branch
Assigns the field set to the selected topic and all its subtopics, regardless of depth.

Copying inheritance

If a child topic is cut or copied, the fields will not be copied along with it.

Modifying or undoing inheritance

You can change the inheritance setting for a topic at any time. Changes can also be undone.

Important notes

  • Requires administrator privileges.
  • Inheritance affects how field sets appear in topic hierarchies.
  • Always verify inheritance settings before making structural changes.
