How to change the default settings of a Word publication
This article explains how to change the default settings for a Word publication by editing the Word theme (.mwt file) and the associated Word template (.dotm file).
Step 1: Open the Word publication settings
-
In Mavim, go to Modelling > Publication > Word Document.
-
The Word publication settings screen will appear.
Here you will see a Wordtheme (.mwt file) selected.
-
Click Edit to open the theme.
-
In the theme editor, you can adjust:
-
Levels – choose which topics to include and in what order.
-
Print – configure printing preferences.
-
User defined fields – select which fields to display.
-
-
On the General tab, you can see which Word template (.dotm file) is being used.
Step 2: Edit the Word template (.dotm file)
You cannot edit a .dotm file directly in the Mavim Cloud, because Microsoft Word is required. To modify it:
-
Download the .dotm file
-
In Mavim, go to Tools > File explorer.
-
An Explorer screen will open.
-
Browse to the .dotm file (by default located in S:\Mavim\Wordthemes\…).
-
Drag the file to TempDisk.
-
The file will automatically be downloaded to your local computer (usually into the Downloads folder).
-
-
Edit the .dotm file locally
-
Open the downloaded .dotm file with Microsoft Word.
-
Make your changes (for example, styles, headers, or formatting).
-
Save the file.
-
-
Upload the modified .dotm file back to Mavim
-
In Mavim, click the slide-out bar at the top and select File Transfer > Upload.
-
Select the modified .dotm file. It will appear on TempDisk in Mavim Cloud.
-
-
Replace the old .dotm file
-
Go to Tools > File explorer
-
In the Explorer screen, drag the modified .dotm file from TempDisk to the original folder (S:\Mavim\Wordthemes\…).
-
Make sure the file name is identical to the original and overwrite it.
-
Now, when you generate a new Word publication, it will use your updated settings.
Notes
-
Always keep a backup of the original .dotm file before overwriting it.
-
Changes to the .mwt file affect what content is included, while changes to the .dotm file affect how the content is styled.
-
Editing the .dotm file requires Microsoft Word on your local machine.
