How to customize a Visio stencil in Mavim Manager

Explain how to create a new Visio stencil, add or edit shapes, and apply the customized stencil in new or existing function flowcharts.

  • Create a new stencil

    • In Mavim Manager, go to Management > New Visio stencil > Function flowchart.
    • Enter a name in the Stencil name field.
    • Click OK.
  • Edit the stencil

    • Go to Management > Edit Visio stencil.
    • Under Visio – Function flowchart stencils, select the newly created stencil.
  • Add a shape from another stencil

    • In the stencil, select the shape you want to replace (for example, Who [Wie]).
    • Click the Alternatives button.
    • Open another stencil file (.vssx) that contains the shape you want to use.
    • You can create a new stencil in your local Visio environment if needed.
    • Select the desired shape and click Add.


  • Format the new shape

    • Select the newly added shape and click Edit.
    • The shape opens in the drawing canvas.
    • Right-click the shape and choose Format shape.


    • Adjust the appearance as desired.


    • Close the editor by clicking the X (do not close Visio but only the Shape).
    • Confirm the prompt by clicking Yes.
  • Set properties and make it the default

    • Select the shape again and click Properties.
    • Enter a name for the shape.
    • The name must be unique.
    • If you want to keep the same name as the original shape, first set the new one as default, then rename it after the original shape has been removed.


    • Click OK.
    • Use the customized stencil

      • In new flowcharts:
        When you create a new function flowchart using the customized stencil, the updated shape will automatically be used.
      • In existing flowcharts:
      • Open the flowchart.
      • Right-click in the drawing canvas.
      • Select Options.
      • Choose the customized stencil.


      • Click OK.

    Notes

    • Only database administrators can create or edit Visio stencils.
    • Customized stencils ensure that specific shapes (like the Who [Wie] shape) reflect your organization’s desired formatting and standards.
    • Existing diagrams will not automatically update; you must manually switch to the new stencil.
