Using RASCI and Other Characteristics in BPMN Collaboration Diagrams
The BPMN standard does not natively support RA(S)CI or other role-based characteristics for Tasks and Activities. However, Mavim provides enhanced functionality to incorporate these attributes into BPMN Collaborations, allowing for more detailed responsibility mapping across Lanes.
Key Concepts
- BPMN Collaboration: A diagram where Tasks/Activities are assigned to Lanes representing functions, departments, or roles.
- RA(S)CI Characteristics: Responsibility attributes like Responsible, Accountable, Consulted, Informed, etc.
- Mavim Extensions: Two key functions :
- Characteristics Range
- Show in One Lane
Function 1: Characteristics Range
This function allows users to filter which characteristics (e.g., Responsible, Accountable) are displayed in a BPMN Collaboration.
How to Use:
- Select the desired Process Pool in the BPMN Collaboration.
- Right-click to open the context menu.
- Choose Characteristics Range.
- Select the characteristics to display (e.g., only “Responsible”).
Note: Characteristics like “blank” are also valid and can affect visibility.
Function 2: Show in One Lane
This function ensures that a Task/Activity is shown in only one Lane, even if multiple relationships exist.
How to Use:
- Select the Shape (Task/Activity) in the desired Lane.
- Right-click to open the context menu.
- Choose Show in One Lane.
Situational Examples
Situation 1: Multiple Characteristics Across Lanes
- A Task is linked to Lane F1 with “Accountable” and to Lane F2 with “Responsible”.
- Result: Task appears in both Lanes.
Situation 2: Same Characteristic in Multiple Lanes
- Task-C is linked to both F2 and F3 with “Responsible”.
- Result: Task appears in both Lanes.
Solution Options:
- Change one of the relationships to a different characteristic (e.g., “blank”).
- Use Show in One Lane to display the Task in only one Lane.
Recommended Workflow
- Start with Characteristics Range to define which attributes should be visible.
- If Tasks still appear in multiple Lanes undesirably, apply Show in One Lane per Task/Lane.
